Hello Back Bay Batriots, happy Friday!
Happy 4th of July Weekend! For most of us it is a 3 day weekend that wont be seen again until 2037. America’s 250th will be a celebration to remember as we log off for a weekend filled with family, friends, neighbors and fireworks. Just not in Newport, because fireworks are illegal. Not that that one neighbor cares.
To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

4th of July Weekend Roundup

FRIDAY, JULY 3
Costa Mesa kicks it off early — for free.
The City of Costa Mesa is hosting a free Independence Day Community Celebration at the OC Fair & Event Center, Lot A, on Friday, July 3. Gates open at 4 p.m., the party runs 5–11 p.m., with fireworks at 9 p.m. Bring your own picnic, lawn chairs, and a blanket — food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Parking is free. No glass containers or outside alcohol. This is the move if you want a big, hometown fireworks show without the Saturday crowds.
Lido Marina Village warms up the weekend.
The festivities begin before Independence Day arrives at Lido Marina Village, with live performances from a Patriotic Brass Quartet running July 2–3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The village has also extended shopping hours through 7 p.m. for the holiday weekend. A low-key, beautiful way to ease into the long weekend.
SATURDAY, JULY 4
The 15th Annual Newport Peninsula Bike Parade — a true local tradition.
The 15th Annual 4th of July is for Families bike parade kicks off at 9 a.m. at West Balboa Boulevard and 36th Street — bikes, scooters, wagons, and strollers all welcome, pups too. The festival continues at Channel Place Park from 9:30–11:30 a.m., with carnival games, arts and crafts, lawn games, music, and food. Pure Peninsula magic. Dress the kids in red, white, and blue and just show up.
The Mariners neighborhood does its own thing — beautifully.
The Mariners 4th of July Family Bike Parade & Celebration runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mariners Park and the VJ Community Center, inviting families to decorate bicycles, wagons, scooters, and strollers before a festive neighborhood parade, followed by live entertainment, food vendors, games, and community fun.
The Old Glory Boat Parade — and a milestone year.
The American Legion Yacht Club's Old Glory Boat Parade takes place July 4 in Newport Harbor, this year celebrating not only Independence Day but the American Legion's own 100th birthday. Boat owners decorate in red, white, and blue and compete for awards including "Best Decorated," "Best Music," and "Best Theme." The fleet cruises starting at 1 p.m. — grab a spot on the sand to watch.
Independence Day on the Back Bay — the big one.
Newport Dunes' Independence Day on the Back Bay runs all day from 8 a.m., with food trucks, full bars, live entertainment, water sports, and electric boat rentals, capped off by a fireworks show co-sponsored by the City of Newport Beach at 9 p.m. DJ yo-B1 spins funk, dance, and R&B from 3–5 p.m., with The Class Band performing everything from oldies to classic rock, pop, country, and Top 40 from 5–8 p.m. Free admission — reserved parking sold out, but day-of unpaved lot parking is still available for $50 off Bayside Drive.
The Map Room: The Best Places to Watch Fireworks Around the Neighborhood
From big shows to intimate neighborhood gatherings, we’ve selected a few key spots to watch fireworks in Newport and Costa Mesa on July 3rd and 4th.
Macy's Fashion Island — shoe sweepstakes.
Macy's at Fashion Island is running a Trend Try-on Sweepstakes on July 4 — try on select shoes, fill out a ballot, and enter to win a new pair. No purchase necessary. Low stakes, high fun.
THE WEEKEND OVERALL
A few practical notes worth passing along: the free Balboa Peninsula Trolley runs Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, serving 22 stops along the Peninsula — park free at the Avon Street Lot near Mariners' Mile and ride in. And Safety Enhancement Zones are in effect in West Newport Beach and Corona del Mar from July 3 through July 6, with enhanced enforcement measures in place. Fireworks possession and use remain illegal in Newport Beach — including "safe and sane" fireworks purchased in neighboring cities. The police drones will be watching.
Costa Mesa, meanwhile, is one of those neighboring cities. Permitted Safe & Sane fireworks booths support local schools, youth sports, and nonprofits — groups like Costa Mesa High School Boosters, Estancia High School Boosters, Kiwanis Club, and Vanguard University have all been included in past years. Buying from a booth is a solid way to celebrate while putting money back into the community.
One big thing to keep in mind: this is America's 250th birthday — the semiquincentennial — which means crowds and traffic across the entire region will be significantly heavier than a typical 4th. Plan ahead, arrive early, and enjoy it.
