Hello Back Bay Boos, happy Friday!
False Fall lasted for a whole 20 minutes on Monday, before the temps crept back above 80 and the lightest breeze kicked off fires in Malibu and Camp Pendleton. Welcome to paradise. The flooding in the Peninsula and up the coast were all we could talk about for a few days, and we’re just thankful no one was seriously hurt and that we don’t work in flood insurance.
To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

Southbound PCH Still Down to One Lane

Cars wait on south bound PCH near Crystal Cove State Park
If you're heading south out of Corona del Mar toward Laguna Beach, expect delays past Reef Point Drive. Caltrans has closed one southbound lane of PCH between El Morro Canyon and Irvine Cove after inspectors identified a deep fissure developing along the seaside bluff. Weeks of heavy swell and heightened tidal surge have chewed away at the coastal slope directly beneath the highway shoulder. Geotechnical crews are on-site monitoring ground stability and engineering reinforcements, but with no firm reopening timeline set, build an extra 15 to 20 minutes into your coastal commute or detour inland via the 73 Toll Road.
For direct video coverage and on-scene footage of the bluff fissure and traffic impacts, watch Caltrans closes PCH lane after crack develops in Crystal Cove cliff. This broadcast details the physical extent of the cliff fracture right below the roadway and outlines Caltrans' inspection protocol.
