Back Bay Book Queen is Crowned
NB Author Honored, Galas, Crawls, Mixers and Expos

Hello Back Bay Bedouins, happy Monday.
Well happy November, and merry Christmas I guess. We are now fully committed to Fall, and the towns are buzzing with holiday get-togethers, galas, and mixers. We hope all the leftover Halloween candy will be put to good use as we try to square our holiday diet with the inevitable influx of tasty treats and home-baked temptations. Maybe this is the season we finally get into Hyrox. All the cool kids are doing it..
To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

Newport environmentalist and children’s author Joan Pizzo, 88—one of the locals who helped stop a 1970s plan to run a freeway through Upper Newport Bay—was honored at Heavenly Home hospice in Mission Viejo for the bay-themed kids’ books she wrote afterward: Little Crumb, Amy Avocet, Pelican Bill, and The Tale of the Bay Ducklings. Pizzo used to take her four kids to the Back Bay with binoculars and turned those real birds into story characters, illustrated by her neighbor and Disney legend Clyde Geronimi (Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp). The books are out of print, but the Newport Bay Conservancy says it’s exploring ways to republish them so the next generation of Newport kids grows up knowing the bay is something you protect.
