Hello Back Bay Beaus, happy Friday!

If you are heading out to help clean up the beaches this weekend, please watch your step for yellow bellied sea snakes. We thought rattle snakes were the only thing we had to worry about but apparently El Nińo had other plans.

To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Beach and river cleanup day

  • Stock Up on Offroad Gear

  • Sunday Run Club

  • Kids movies in the park

10,000 Pounds of Trash. One Morning.

Saturday is shaping up to be the biggest volunteer morning of the year around here, with three separate cleanups running at once: Upper Newport Bay, where over a thousand people will fan out across a dozen sites with a 10,000-pound trash goal; Crystal Cove State Park, hosting its spots at Pelican Point and Reef Point as part of the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day; and the Santa Ana River mouth at Tower 74, where the watershed draining three counties and six million people empties onto the sand. All three start at 9am. If you've ever wondered where most of the trash actually comes from, that river mouth is the honest answer, and it's also the reason the endangered Least Terns and Snowy Plovers that nest here need us to show up. Pick one, register in advance (Upper Newport Bay and Tower 74 both ask for a signup, and Tower 74 needs a signed waiver), wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. Kids are welcome at all three, though under-18s need an adult. T-shirts while supplies last at the bay. Bring gloves if you have them.
