Bear Flag IV Coming to 17th Street

The Bear is coming for old Santa Monica Seafood spot, last chance for scares, Singles Mixer at Lido House

Hello Back Bay Boos, happy Monday.

We are happy to report the occupants of the plane that crash landed on the sand Thursday night in Huntington Beach (the Crash Landing Capital of Orange County), were uninjured. In other news, residents recently evacuated for a gas leak on the Peninsula returned to their homes, while the home where the leak originated from remains red-tagged. When we said we wanted to be spooked this halloween that’s not what we meant. Lots to do, we have updated the list of events for this week to focus on Halloween festivities to kick off the season.

To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Bear Flag coming to 17th

  • Horror Movie Trivia at the Goose

  • Singles Parties, Costume Parties, bar crawls

Cost Mesa: New Bear Flag Coming to Old Santa Monica Seafood Location on 17th

Thanks for all the fish…

Bear Flag Fish Co. is angling for Costa Mesa. The Newport-born “wave-to-table” favorite is working with the city to open at 154 E. 17th St. (the former Santa Monica Seafood space). Health agency records show the project is in active review, with an “unable to approve plans” note as of Oct. 6—so not open yet, but moving through the hoops.

Founded in 2007 by owner/fisherman Thos Carson, Bear Flag runs its own boats (Bear Flag OG, II, III) chasing swordfish and bluefin along the California coast with a focus on sustainability. You already know the hits from their Peninsula, Crystal Cove, and HB spots: fish tacos and burritos, poke bowls, platters, chowder, plus a market counter and sushi bar. Fun fact: all seafood runs through their Costa Mesa distribution hub—making the 17th st location a natural choice. Fun Fact: former NB store employee Mattson Smith went on to found Seager Co, a local favorite menswear and outdoor gear brand known for its unique blend of surf and western aesthetics.
