Hello Back Bay Breitlings,
We hope that none of you were trampled at the latest tote bag drop at Trader Joes. Who knew pastel striped mini totes would bring out such unmitigated avarice in the general public. The weekend ahead is full of local summer activities as we breeze into the smack dab middle of the year.
To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

King Tides Reshape the Coast in Real Time

An underground wire exposed by erosion at the Wedge
Recent historic summer swells and king tides have caused dramatic coastal erosion across Southern California, severely shrinking local beaches right before the peak summer season. The impacts have hit close to home, with 25-foot-plus waves carving out the beach at the Wedge and powerful surf nearly tipping a lifeguard tower at Crystal Cove State Beach. While infrastructure like the newly renovated North Beach cottages at Crystal Cove held strong, the stark loss of sand has sparked a critical debate among experts and residents: is this a natural seasonal cycle that Mother Nature will fix, or is human intervention desperately needed? While some city officials count on winter swells to naturally shift the sand back, others point out that inland dams and coastal infrastructure have permanently disrupted natural sediment flows, leaving our beaches increasingly vulnerable to the incoming El Niño.
